Hamburger Buns

Summertime means BBQ season and I have been bombarded with mouthwatering burger recipes, none of which included homemade buns. So this is yet another experience where I am oh-so-grateful for Pinterest and someone pinning this homemade hamburger bun recipe, because frankly it’s awesome, and everyone knows a good burger needs a good bun. So stop buying buns, and try these. They are quick and easy to make (40 minutes start to finish!) and way better than any store bought buns you could find.

Recipe:

Homemade Hamburger Buns (adapted from 40 Minute Hamburger Buns by One Sweet Appetite):

Makes 6 buns

2 tbsp active dry yeast

1 cup hot water (the water should be hot, but not so hot that you can’t keep a finger in the water for a few seconds)

1/4 cup sugar

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 egg

1 1/2 tsp salt

2 cups whole-wheat pastry flour

1 1/2 – 2 cups all-purpose flour

2 tbsp melted butter, for brushing on top of the buns when they come out of the oven

  1. Preheat your oven to 425˚F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. 
  2. In a large bowl, combine the yeast, water, sugar and oil. Stir gently and let sit for 10 minutes (the mixture should have frothed up at the end of 10 minutes)
  3. Stir in the egg, salt, whole wheat flour, and 1 cup of the all-purpose flour until you have a soft wet dough.
  4. Dust your counter with flour and gently knead the dough gradually adding the remaining 1/2 to 1 cup all-purpose flour until the dough is not longer sticky.
  5. Form into a ball and cut into 6 even pieces.
  6. Roll each piece into a ball, place on the parchment paper lined baking sheet and gently flatten out the top of each ball with your fingers.
  7. Cover with a clean towel and let rest 10 more minutes.
  8. Uncover and bake for 10-12 minutes until golden.
  9. Remove from the oven and immediately brush with melted butter. Allow to cool until you are ready to eat. Enjoy!

I know this last picture isn’t pretty. I took the picture with my phone for my husband who wanted to know how the buns and veggie burgers turned out. The answer delicious!
